Why Accuracy Matters for Ammonia
Ammonia at 0.25 ppm is stressful for fish. At 1 ppm it’s deadly over hours. Test strips give you a rough colour match β they might show “safe” (0) when you actually have 0.25 or 0.5 ppm. The API kit’s liquid drops are far more precise at this critical range.
During a nitrogen cycle, when ammonia and nitrite spike, you need to know exactly how high they are to decide whether to do an emergency water change. Strips simply can’t give you that confidence.
Our Verdict
For anyone with fish in their tank, the API Master Test Kit is a must-own item. The $38 upfront cost works out to 800 tests at about 5 cents each. Test strips at $10 for 25 work out to 40 cents each β and with lower accuracy. Over one year of weekly testing (52 tests), the API kit costs $2.60; 52 test strips would cost $20.80 and give you worse data.
Buy the API kit. You won’t regret it.
